FAQ's

What is Oilskin?

The use of Oilskin aka waxed cotton, originated over two century's ago in Scotland. The cloth was treated with Linseed oil and made into sails for the British Clipper Ships of old, along with the traditional seaman's waterproofed cape's. By the 1930's, the process of treating a lightweight cotton canvas with a heated solution of specialized oils and waxes, continues to present day - producing an incredibly durable, resistant cloth, which stands up to harsh weather condtions, but remains soft and pliable with a rich buttery hand.

Our Leather:

At M. P. Karryall we use quality pure aniline leathers. Top grain leather that is dyed for colour without any pigments applied. These hides show a deep, warm, non-directional grain - exibiting a worn distressed look with a soft waxy hand.

Our Suede:

Our suedes are substantial 4 - 4.5 oz cowhide splits, buffed to a velvet softness, and chrome-tanned with rich earth and jewel tones.

Our Canvas:

Many MPK Designs incorporate the traditional use of tough Marine Quality cotton canvas in various weights and textures - #10 (light), #15 (medium), #18 (heavy). The lighter weights are generally used as  lining material for our quality leather bags, along with Canton Flannel - a twill-weave cotton fabric with a soft fleecy nap on one side.  The use of natural cotton canvas not only imparts a relaxed comfortable styling, but provides a stable, strong material of uncompromized quality and durablility.
