The Lilith

“We are equal to each other in as much as we were both created from the earth ...
and I will not be submissive to you.”
(the alphabet of Ben Sira)

Sunlight softly filters through the tree lined street, igniting the leaves in a molten gold -- the entry to her brownstone awash in a faint rose hue, reflecting the suns dance across the heavens. She pauses at the steps and listens to her town as it breathes a peaceful sigh of quiet and contentment. Her spirit opens in answer, embracing the knowledge of infinite connection and brilliant communion.

How long has it been? Indeed, it feels as if it were another lifetime. Lilith’s past was filled with tormenting memories that claw at her heart. If she concentrates too long she can still feel the biting pain of defeat and sorrow from a distant time when her life was narrowly defined by another. But she could also recall that even though she was beaten, scorched and torn, there was something else -- a small flame of defiance, kept safe from harm, continued to burn deep within her very soul that refused to be extinguished.

Entering her home, Lilith critically examines her self as it reflects back in the foyer mirror. Standing in front of her is a woman lithe and petite, but feet solidly planted. Shoulders straight and confident, untroubled with supporting her leather tote and handbag -- symbolic of her capable mind and thriving business. Her eyes, looking back with humor, still maintain that gleaming spark of irrepressible defiance. Still amazed that there are no visible scars to show the tale of her journey, Lilith winks at herself in giddy delight, secretly acknowledging the pure translucent energy surrounding her. A silent and powerful veil of protective light to be used as a talisman and healing balm for the many quivering female spirits still imprisoned.

Rebirth -- this too is wrought with pain and despair. Crawling out from your tight cocoon, weak and wretched. Slowly, laboriously, unfolding your wings so they may dry in the sunlight. Tentatively watching how the light brings forth a brilliant pattern of colour and form that is uniquely you. To be “female” is not a punishment. To be “woman” is no crime. Preserve and protect all that is you. Strong, Vibrant, Intelligent, Independent -- chant these words to your spirit -- a mantra for female liberation toward equality and harmony.
